Looking Back...

If you'd asked me at 18 where my career was heading, I honestly wouldn't have had an answer.

In fact, my journey into the beauty industry wasn't born out of a lifelong dream—it was born out of feeling completely lost.

I'd started my A Levels, but quickly realised they weren't the right path for me. I wasn't enjoying them, I lacked direction and, for the first time, I found myself wondering what came next. Looking back, it felt like failure. At the time, I couldn't see that it was actually the beginning of something far better.

Almost by chance, I came across a course in Beauty Therapy.

It seemed to tick all the right boxes. I've always had a creative side and loved working with my hands, but I was equally fascinated by science, anatomy and the incredible complexity of the human body. Beauty therapy brought those two worlds together in a way I hadn't expected—and from the moment I started, I knew I'd found where I belonged.

That decision changed the course of my life.

Feeling Lost... and Finding My Place

I began my training at De Montfort University in Lincoln, where I was honoured to be named Student of the Year. Completing my qualification ahead of schedule earned me a year of advanced education with the International Dermal Institute—an opportunity that deepened my understanding of skin science and cemented a passion for evidence-led practice that still drives me today.

Even in those early days, I was never content with simply learning how to perform a treatment. I wanted to know why skin behaves the way it does. Why one person responds brilliantly to a treatment while another doesn't. Why two people with seemingly identical concerns can need completely different solutions.

That curiosity has shaped every chapter of my career.

Never Stop Asking Why

As my knowledge grew, so did my ambition. I realised that I didn't just enjoy treating people—I loved helping others understand why things worked too.

Teaching became a natural extension of clinical practice, and in 2001 I stepped into education. Over the following years, I gained my teaching qualifications, became an Assessor and Internal Quality Assurer, and spent more than a decade teaching within Further Education, helping to develop the next generation of therapists and practitioners.

Looking back, education has never been separate from my clinical work. The two have always gone hand in hand. The more I learned, the more I wanted to share that knowledge with others.

Taking the Leap

Then life presented me with another crossroads.

Following maternity leave, I had every intention of returning to full-time teaching. Instead, I took a leap of faith and opened my own clinic.

Like many businesses, it started modestly as a beauty salon with a talented team of therapists. But as both the industry and my own interests evolved, so did the business.

I found myself drawn towards increasingly advanced treatments—not because they were fashionable, but because they allowed me to solve more complex problems and achieve more meaningful, long-lasting results for my clients.

Beyond Beauty

That evolution led me into advanced skin health, permanent make-up, laser procedures, scar revision and restorative tattooing.

Each new skill wasn't simply another treatment to add to a menu; it was another piece of the puzzle. Another way to help someone restore confidence after illness or surgery, improve skin that had troubled them for years, or simply feel more like themselves.

Still Learning. Still Educating.

Education has remained woven through everything I do.

Alongside running my clinic, I've continued to teach, mentor, assess and quality assure professional qualifications, working with training providers across the UK to help raise standards within our industry.

Supporting practitioners to become skilled, ethical and confident professionals is every bit as rewarding as treating my own clients.

The Claire Stokes Approach

Today, my work brings together everything I've learned over the past three decades.

Skin health. Permanent make-up. Restorative tattooing. Education. Mentoring. Test-based wellness support.

They may appear to be different disciplines, but they all share the same purpose: helping people achieve results that are thoughtful, personalised and built to last.

My approach has always been guided by curiosity, evidence and a genuine desire to understand the person sitting in front of me. I don't believe there is a one-size-fits-all solution. The best outcomes come from listening carefully, asking the right questions and creating a plan that is tailored to the individual.

Whether I'm treating a client, mentoring a practitioner or supporting someone's wellbeing, those principles remain exactly the same.

Looking Forward...

If there's one thing my career has taught me, it's that there is rarely a single solution. The best outcomes come from listening carefully, asking the right questions and never losing the curiosity to keep learning.

Looking back, I'm incredibly grateful that those A Levels didn't work out. Had they done, my life might have taken a very different path.

Instead, I found a career that still inspires me almost thirty years later...

...and I still wake up excited to discover what's next.
